Glasgow's sandstone tenements
Glasgow is Scotland's biggest city, with more than 600,000 people. Most of its tenements went up in the 1800s and early 1900s, as the city grew fast. Nearly all of them are red or blonde sandstone. Most stand three to five floors high.
Whole districts are made of them. On the Southside there are Shawlands, Battlefield, Govanhill and Mount Florida. In the West End there are Hyndland and Partick. The Hyndland tenements were built from 1898 to 1910.
From the mid 1950s to the late 1970s, the city knocked down many of its worst tenements. Lots of families moved out to new towns. Livingston was one of them.
The tenements that are left are now well over 100 years old. Some have new wiring. Some still have old wiring or an old fuse box. A check tells you which kind of flat you have.
